School Openning

 Dalry Primary and Nursery School Opens in time for the new term in August 2007

 In June 2005 McTaggart Construction Ltd were appointed main contractor on the new build project of Dalry Primary and Nursery School. McTaggart is especially delighted to be involved with this project because of the innovative and modern design in relation to school construction and functionality. From the start, the design of the school has been a collaborative work between artists Bruce McLean and Will McLean and North Ayrshire Council’s Educational and Technical Services departments.

 The scope for developing music and creative skills, as well as encouraging sporting achievements are highly advanced even for a modern educational establishment. The school has thoughtfully integrated space to be used by the community, an aspect too often overlooked when developing community and educational projects. The inclusion of the nursery, although separate but adequately adjacent, is particularly impressive allowing the transition for pre-school to primary school much easier for the children. This is a pioneering design, and as such required and received full cooperation from the whole project team.

 The outcome is a school like no other. Embodying the concept of ‘Imbedded Intelligence’ throughout its construction the school is divided into three main zones:

  • a community area that includes a full-sized games hall and facilities, refectory, kitchens and administration;
  •  a central spine that houses meeting rooms and the extraordinary inflatable ICT suite, looking as though a spaceship has crashed into the building, and the environmental house on top of the building, as well as changing rooms and toilets;
  •   on the other side of this is the area housing all the class bases. Each one contains a unique feature integral to its structure. This area also contains the conical library that spirals up through the roof.
  •  The rich variety of artworks is visible throughout the school, from the enormous steel mesh tree sculpture growing up the outside of the building to the subtle additions of information in the stairwells.

 We are confident that our part as main contractor has contributed in constructing a building that will provide a safe and secure environment, include all the best modern building practice and will take cognisance of the economical limitations attached to such a public project. Also, as this project is on our doorstep and we employed local labour and subcontractors we can therefore deduce this was indeed a community effort and believe the school will rightfully claim to be at the heart of the community.

 McTaggart's have an excellent client relationship with North Ayrshire Council having recently completed other schools projects for this client. These include the extension to Abbey Primary School in Kilwinning, new build Nursery at Springvale, Saltcoats and the extension to St. Mary’s Primary School in Largs.
